North Alabama Shoals Hospital

North Alabama Shoals Hospital (NASH) is a 178-bed general acute care facility serving communities across North Alabama. The hospital’s behavioral health service line includes:
- 20-bed Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Unit
- 30-bed Geriatric Psychiatric (Senior Care Center) Unit
- Planned Expansion (2026): 16-bed Adolescent Psychiatric Unit and 8 additional Adult Psychiatric beds
As the only acute inpatient psychiatric facility in the region, NASH serves as the primary destination for involuntary evaluations and commitment orders issued by probate courts across multiple counties.
Forensic Psychiatry Experience: Residents collaborate with community mental health officers and probate courts, gaining hands-on experience in legal processes and expert witness testimony under attending supervision.
North Alabama Medical Center

North Alabama Medical Center, part of Lifepoint Health, opened its doors as a new, modern 263-bed acute care hospital in Florence, Alabama in 2018. Rooted in tradition dating back more than a century, NAMC is the replacement facility for Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, and together with its sister hospital North Alabama Shoals Hospital, serves residents across Florence, Muscle Shoals and northwest Alabama. As a regional healthcare leader, NAMC has more than 200 physicians on staff representing more than 40 specialty areas of medicine including emergency services, open heart surgery and other advanced cardiovascular services, women and children’s services, imaging and surgical services, and more. The facility is a level III trauma center, an accredited chest pain center and the area’s only designated primary stroke center.

Riverbend Center for Mental Health – Community Psychiatry Training Site

Riverbend Center for Mental Health (RCMH) has served the behavioral health needs of Colbert, Franklin, and Lauderdale counties for over 50 years. As the only certified community mental health center in the region, RCMH provides the most extensive range of outpatient and community psychiatric services in North Alabama.
- Serves approximately 8,000 clients annually
- Employs over 160 staff, including full-time psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners

Shoals Behavioral Health – Outpatient Continuity Clinic
Location: 203 W. Avalon Ave. Suite 100, Muscle Shoals, AL 35661
The primary PGY-3 outpatient training site, Shoals Behavioral Health, provides psychiatry residents with longitudinal experience managing adolescent, adult, and geriatric outpatients.
- One half-day per week dedicated to individual psychotherapy under faculty supervision.
- Exposure to various therapy modalities, including CBT, supportive therapy, and others.

Integrated Behavioral Health

Integrated Behavioral Health clinic in Muscle Shoals is a private psychiatry clinic providing services to both children and adult patient populations. IBH provides medication management and psychotherapy services to patients with various mental health problems, including Major Depression, Anxiety disorder, PTSD, OCD, Eating disorder, Bipolar related disorders, Schizophrenia spectrum disorder, and ADHD. IBH clinic also provides Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation with state-of-the-art equipment and trained faculty.

Lister Healthcare, LLC
Location: 102-A Physicians Drive, Muscle Shoals, AL 35661
The Addiction Psychiatry rotation consists of supervised evaluation and clinical management of patients with substance use disorders. Residents will spend five days a week at the True Medical Group. Residents complete four weeks of Addiction medicine rotation in the PGY-1 year and another four weeks in the PGY-2 year under the supervision of Dr.Roy Barco, M.D., Ph.D. Residents will learn the principles of methadone and buprenorphine replacement for the treatment of opioid dependence and gain experience in pain management, where applicable, along with recognizing signs of substance use disorder.

Valley Behavioral Service, LLC

Valley Behavioral Services serves as an elective rotation site for PGY-4 residents in our psychiatry residency program, offering advanced clinical exposure to innovative neuromodulation and interventional treatments. Under the supervision of Dr. Ammar Alrefai, residents gain hands-on experience in administering and managing Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Ketamine therapy for treatment-resistant psychiatric conditions. This rotation enhances residents’ understanding of emerging therapies in psychiatry and equips them with practical skills in patient selection, safety monitoring, and treatment protocols for these specialized modalities.

Avalon Medical Group

The resident will rotate two four-week blocks under the supervision of Dr. Loren McCoy and Dr.Lora Lindsey. This primary care rotation aims to provide residents with comprehensive training in the principles and practices of primary care. It is designed to equip residents with the skills necessary to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care, emphasizing the importance of preventive medicine, chronic disease management, and the coordination of care.

North Alabama Neurosurgery
Location: 426 E Dr. Hicks Blvd. Florence, AL 35630
North Alabama Neurosurgery provides clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders commonly encountered, such as neoplasms, dementia, headaches, head trauma, infectious diseases, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, seizure disorders, acute confusional states, ADHD, HD, and stroke and related disorders. A board-certified Neurologist will always supervise the PGY-1 residents during their two monthly core rotations.

Decatur Morgan West Child & Adolescent Inpatient Facility
Location: 1615 Kathy Ln SW, Decatur, AL 35603
Decatur Morgan West Child & Adolescent Inpatient facility serves children ages 5 to 12 years and adolescents ages 13 to 19 years in a psychiatric crisis. The program provides assessment and stabilization of psychiatric symptoms. Children whose behaviors are life-threatening, destructive, disabling, or require 24-hour monitoring and assessment meet the criteria for admission.

Felix Morris, MD LLC

Residents will be introduced to the fundamentals of sleep. The resident will gain a basic understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of common sleep disorders under the leadership of Dr. Felix Morris, who brings decades of experience providing specialized sleep medicine care to the community.
